  1. Group of volcanic islands 100 km/60 mi off
  2. the NW coast of Africa, forming the Spanish
  3. provinces of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de
  4. Tenerife; area 7,300 sq km/2,818 sq mi;
  5. population (1986) 1,615,000. features The
  6. chief centres are Santa Cruz on Tenerife
  7. (which also has the highest peak in
  8. extra-continental Spain, Pico de Teide 3,713
  9. m/12,186 ft), and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.
  10. The province of Santa Cruz comprises
  11. Tenerife, Palma, Gomera, and Hierro; the
  12. province of Las Palmas comprises Gran
  13. Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. There
  14. are also six uninhabited islets. The Northern
  15. Hemisphere Observatory (1981) is on the
  16. island of Las Palmas, the first in the world
  17. to be controlled remotely. Observation
  18. conditions are among the best in the world,
  19. since there is no moisture, no artificial
  20. light pollution, and little natural airglow.
  21. The Organization of African Unity (OAU)
  22. supports an independent Guanch Republic (so
  23. called from the indigenous islanders, a
  24. branch of the N African Berbers) and revival
  25. of the Guanch language.
